Belgium: Halal estimated at 1.7 billion euros

The Belgian market for halal products represents a turnover of € 1.7 billion, according to a rough estimate issued by the Flemish Department of Agriculture and Fisheries based on the Dutch market, reports the Belgian press.

The department suggests a "wild" growth of halal certification organizations in a country that currently has around a dozen, each with its own criteria and control methods. According to the report, this has resulted in a stronger demand for a halal standard that would benefit consumers and help to counteract bad practices and a lack of transparency.

It is also noted that these products are primarily sold through traditional channels of halal distribution, such as butchers or specialty ethnic shops. But it points out that the big chains are becoming increasingly aware of the halal market and its potential.

An estimated 630,000 Muslims live in Belgium. The domestic halal market therefore weighs much heavier than the estimate given by the Flemish Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, which ignores the French-speaking area, where there is also a large Muslim community.
